How does government welfare stack up against private charity? It’s no contest

FEE’s Joel Lim writes, “It’s that time of year again, the time when Americans consume more than ever, but also the time when Americans give more than ever. Indeed, America's generosity as a whole is actually quite extensive, with Americans giving $471 billion in 2020, an all time high. That's more than what the vast majority of countries bring in for tax revenue. 80% of this is from individuals, according to Giving USA.

Americans, in general, are incredibly generous, with 25% of Americans volunteering every year...

Since the government started the ‘War on Poverty’ 56 years ago, it has spent $27 trillion on this effort. And yet, it was only the beginning 7 years when poverty rates went down. Why? Well, one likely explanation is that welfare has taught people not to work, as governmental welfare dependency statistics have shown. Indeed, 93% of welfare recipients rely on welfare for more than 2 years. Charity, on the other hand, is not guaranteed, so it encourages people to take responsibility and become self-sufficient…

Americans are a generous people, and we will step up and provide for the poor, especially if taxation is lowered through sensible cuts in welfare. Studies have found that ‘decreasing government funding increases the number of donors,’ which makes sense because a decrease in public spending means the people have more money to spend themselves.

A huge welfare state is not a practical solution for America, and its one-size-fits-all approach simply isn't working. The effects of the interventionist welfare state have been disastrous to taxpayers, communities, liberty, and the poor.”

Fauci should be in prison for lying to Congress

The Post Millennial reports, “Senator and Doctor Rand Paul called for Biden's Covid spokesperson Dr. Anthony Fauci to go to prison over comments he made to Congress regarding gain of function research.

In a recent interview on Fox, Sen. Rand Paul held nothing back when sharing his thoughts on Dr. Fauci, accusing the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director of lying to Congress.

‘We've referred him to the Department of Justice,’ Sen. Paul told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo, ‘but then again, Merrick Garland is the one now going after parents that go to school board meetings, so I don't have a lot of hope that Merrick Garland is objectively looking at Fauci's lying.’

‘Fauci should go to prison for five years for lying to Congress,’ Sen. Paul continued. ‘They have prosecuted other people. They have selectively gone after Republicans, but in no way will they do anything about him lying. But he should be prosecuted for lying."

Democrats couldn't run a 7-Eleven, much less the government

From my Fox Business interview on Thursday: "When we passed the last spending bill in September, we knew this date was coming. The Democrats have done nothing. They've not introduced a spending bill, and I don't even think it's passed the House yet… they're going to do it on the last day. Well, things in the Senate take about a week to pass, and that's the normal procedure around here… that includes amendments. If they want to force it through with no amendments and they want to do it in a short period of time, they have to have unanimous consent. Well, a lot of us don't consent… just because the Democrats are incompetent and haven't brought it forward that we should speed up time to let them spend more money that is bankrupting our country.

The debt ceiling is the same way; we move the debt ceiling back two months, about a month ago or so, it's going to be coming up in the next week or two. They've had plenty of time to go to committee, to do all the things they need to do to do it through reconciliation. Instead, they're going to wait to the last minute and ask people like me, who are dead set against raising the debt ceiling, like, say, ‘Oh, can you pretty, pretty please speed it up and let only Democrats pass this?’ No. If they want to raise the debt ceiling, they ought to do it. They've had plenty of time to do it. This is all on Democrats, it’s their incompetence in getting anything done. These people couldn't run a 7-Eleven, much less the government."

Biden’s far-left FCC nominee Gigi Sohn would be a complete disaster

Freedomworks’ Alex Deise writes, “Despite campaigning as a moderate Democrat, President Biden has spent his first year in office governing no differently than how President Bernie Sanders would. As a result, his approval rating stands at a record low of 38%, inflation is completely out of control, and the economy is struggling to grow.

Instead of changing course, President Biden has decided to continue in the same direction. He is still nominating far-left radical partisan ideologues to run the most powerful administrative agencies in the federal government. Today’s example features Gigi Sohn, whom President Biden nominated to be a Commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

If Sohn is confirmed, the FCC will promulgate a series of high-profile liberal policies that would never receive the support necessary to pass Congress. For starters, it is likely the FCC will adopt the same net neutrality policy it did when Sohn served as counsel to FCC Chairman Wheeler.”

End U.S. missile sales to Saudi Arabia

The American Conservative’s Geoff Lamear writes, “In response to the proposed sale of U.S. missiles to Saudi Arabia, Senators Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders are leading a bipartisan effort to oppose the sale. This is still a fight of David and Goliath, as Congress has never successfully stopped an arms sale.

It’s time for that to change.

While President Biden has pledged to end support for 'offensive operations,' U.S. support for Saudi Arabia has continued under the guise of defense…

While attention on Saudi Arabia is warranted, many have failed to notice that the U.S. quietly allowed the UAE to continue receiving $23 billion in U.S. arms. A U.S. official also confirmed last week that the UAE is slated to receive advanced F-35 fighter jets despite the UAE’s continued involvement and possible war crimes in Yemen. Amid reports that the UAE allowed the construction of Chinese military facilities, the U.S. needs to stop its blank-check support for a government that doesn’t reciprocate. Just as with Saudi Arabia, neutrality would better insulate the U.S. from conflicts that don’t threaten Americans.”

‘Build Back Better’ will likely cost double what the CBO projects

Reason’s Eric Boehm writes, “President Joe Biden's Build Back Better Act is likely to end up costing taxpayers about double what the official price tag suggests, and much of that hidden cost will end up being added to the national debt.

That's the conclusion from two independent analyses of the proposal released in recent weeks. Both rely on a key assumption that did not figure into the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) analysis of the bill: that the Build Back Better plan's various policies will be in place for at least the next 10 years.

‘The Build Back Better Act relies on a number of arbitrary sunsets and expirations to lower the official cost of the bill,’ explains the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), a nonprofit that advocates for balanced budgets. The group's newly updated analysis of the Build Back Better plan finds that the package will cost an estimated $4.8 trillion over 10 years if all provisions are made permanent—double the price tag applied by the CBO last month.”
