Senate passes resolution to end mask mandate for public travel

The Washington Examiner reports, “A Republican-backed resolution to end the federal mask mandate on public transportation cleared the Senate on Tuesday.

The resolution passed 57–40 with bipartisan support but faces significant barriers to becoming law due to the Biden administration's veto threat and uncertainty over whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi will even allow a vote on the measure in the House.

‘Today, the Senate said enough is enough and sent a message to unelected government bureaucrats to stop the anti-science nanny-state requirement of travel mask mandates,’ Sen. Rand Paul said in a statement following the vote. ‘Since March 2020, unelected bureaucrats have incessantly declared that we should ‘follow the science.’ But the same bureaucrats continue to defy science by imposing an ineffective and restrictive mask mandate for individuals traveling on public transit and airplanes."

We can oppose Ukraine in NATO and still stand with freedom seekers worldwide

From my column at The American Conservative, “To a man, our Founders expressed their desire to have questions of war decided by the collective wisdom of Congress and not by the whims of a single President. Madison wrote that the executive branch was the branch most likely to engage in war and, therefore, the drafters of the Constitution deliberately vested that power in the legislature.

These sentiments still ring true to many libertarians, who believe that war should be the last resort, that war should only be fought with a formal congressional declaration, and that America cannot be expected to send its sons and daughters to be sacrificed in every war on the planet, even when the call for war is sought by fellow aspirants for liberty.

But it’s important to clarify that the heart of Quincy Adams—as well as many modern-day libertarians, including myself—aligns with freedom seekers around the globe.

I have not one shred of sympathy for aggressor nations who invade and pillage adjoining countries. None.

A policy of restraint can argue simultaneously that admitting Ukraine into NATO is foolishly provocative and that Russia’s aggression is unjustified, unwarranted, and ultimately will be destructive both to Ukraine and to Russia herself.”

My amendment would oust Fauci for good

The Daily Wire reports, “Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced a measure on Monday that would eliminate the position held by Dr. Anthony Fauci as head of the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Paul’s amendment, designed to take central power away from the head of that organization, would divide NIAID into three distinct research facilities.

‘Paul’s amendment would reorganize NIAID by breaking it down into three separate national research institutes, all with their own director, including the National Institute of Allergic Diseases, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, and the National Institute of Immunologic Diseases,’ Fox News reported.”

We should not be providing weapons to countries that abuse their citizens as badly as Egypt does

Abdel Fattah al Sisi is Egypt’s president. He receives billions of dollars worth of weapons from the United States. He is also responsible for one of the most abusive governments on the planet. President Joe Biden committed to putting 'human rights at the center of foreign policy,' but his willingness to sell weapons to Egypt contradicts that pledge. Thankfully, Sen. Rand Paul is looking to hold Biden to his word.

We can't claim to care about human rights as we arm a regime at war with its own people

The Daily Wire reports, "In January, it was reported that the Biden administration authorized $2.5 billion in arms sales to Egypt, despite ongoing concerns regarding human rights abuses...

In response last month, Senator Rand Paul told The Daily Wire that he would 'force the [United States] Senate to vote on a bipartisan joint resolution that would cancel the latest military sale to Egypt’s criminal masters.' According to the Senator’s office, the vote will be forced on Thursday March 10.

'Egyptians continue to live under the harsh authoritarian rule of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi,' Dr. Paul said."

I applaud the Senate for passing the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act

McClatchy reports, “Paul celebrated passage of the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, which the Senate cleared by unanimous consent on Monday. But it was he who held up the bill in the spring of 2020, leading to a tense rhetorical exchange with two Black Democrats, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and then-Sen. Kamala Harris of California about the scope of their proposal.

Now Booker is hailing Paul for his work on amending the bill to create 'the bipartisan backing that we have to finally meet this moment and help our nation move forward from some of its darkest chapters.'

Paul’s initial objection to the bill was rooted in language he believed would have led to more minor crimes being characterized as lynching, a heinous act of violence that originated in the Jim Crow South. 'This bill would cheapen the meaning of lynching by defining it so broadly as to include a minor bruise or abrasion,' Paul said on the Senate floor in early June of 2020. 'Our national history of racial terrorism demands more seriousness of us than that.”
