In times of war, defense of the Bill of Rights becomes even more urgent

David Keene writes at the Washington Times, “Wilson, like many national leaders before and since, considered anyone who questioned his policies disloyal and argued that by doing so, they 'sacrificed the right to civil liberties.' He was hostile, particularly to German Americans, whom he called 'hyphenated' and regarded as a fifth column within the country. They were persecuted by a president who declared that 'any man who carries a hyphen about with him carries a dagger that he is ready to plunge into the vitals of this Republic when he gets ready.' This was the same attitude that led Franklin D. Roosevelt to round up and intern Japanese Americans in World War II and regard both German and Italian Americans as a threat to U.S. security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and many of his harshest critics in this country seem to be channeling Wilson’s spirit. One of the Russian dictator’s first acts after launching his unprovoked assault on Ukraine was to make it a jailable offense to criticize or even call the invasion an invasion.

Last week at a massive Moscow rally, Mr. Putin dismissed his critics as 'gnats.' He suggested true Russians will 'always be able to distinguish true patriots from scum and traitors,' calling those who disagree with his policies 'fifth columnists' and vowing that Russians will 'simply spit them out like an insect in their mouth, spit them onto the pavement.'

In our country, some politicians are similarly labeling anyone who questions the wisdom of our response 'traitors.' Suggesting that President Biden’s policies may have contributed to the crisis leading to the invasion are described in much the same terms by people who recognize authoritarianism in foreign politicians, but not in the mirror. Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, former Democratic former Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe are calling out Fox commentator Tucker Carlson and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard not for being wrong, but for treason. They would undoubtedly spit out such fifth columnists like an insect in their mouth.”

How Washington can end the inflation crisis it created

From my latest at Fox News, “The good news is, federal policymakers know what spurred inflation to its historic gallop over the last year. The bad news is, it was them.

That’s why Congress and President Biden spent 2021 ignoring inflation or insisting it was merely ‘transitory.’ It’s not. The four-decade high 7% inflation rate Americans endured last year jumped to 7.9% in February and seems headed even higher. Contrary to Democrats’ misdirection, this inflation wasn’t caused by COVID-19, but by the federal government’s ham-handed responses to it.

Congress has pumped more than $6 trillion in COVID relief into the U.S. economy, while the Fed injected $4.7 trillion into financial markets. Congress authorized almost $2 trillion of this ‘relief’ in 2021, long after most of the country had largely returned to normal, when even progressive economists warned it could trigger inflation. Much of this cash was given to businesses that never closed and households whose wages never fell. Yet the president and his party insisted all their spending was urgently needed.

This tidal wave of spending crashed into a supply strangled by regulations and mandates hurting truckers, shippers and energy producers, while paying millions of Americans not to work and handing our critical infrastructure to unions who block efficiency to squeeze more money from the rest of us.”

Protecting free speech and other rights should be the measure for Ukraine

Legal scholar Jonathan Turley writes, “The country has struggled with free speech guarantees. Political opponents like Viktor Medvedchuk were put under house arrest by Zelenskyy (he later escaped). Zelenskyy also previously banned opposing television channels.

I recognize that it must be infuriating to watch parties expressly or tacitly support an invading power. Yet, that is precisely what should distinguish Ukraine from Russia at this historic moment. Putin supporters will, of course, miss that distinction. They will use their freedoms to seek to deny the freedoms of their fellow citizens. However, they should not be the measure of Ukraine. Free speech and other rights should be the measure.

Ukraine is not the first country to strike out at dissenters in wartime. This country has had its own checkered history in arresting those who opposed our wars. We were wrong then and Zelenskyy is wrong now.”

Shame on the Republicans who voted to keep Fauci but impeach Trump

The Daily Caller reports, “Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul slammed a group of five Republican senators who voted Tuesday against his amendment to remove Dr. Anthony Fauci but had once voted in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump.

‘I guess I’m not surprised that Republican senators who voted to get rid of Donald Trump voted to keep Anthony Fauci,’ Paul said in an exclusive statement to the Daily Caller. ‘Disappointed but not surprised. I think if Republican voters in their home states learn of this vote to keep Anthony Fauci, these voters will be very unhappy.’

Republican Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas all voted against the amendment.”
