Rep. Nancy Mace writes, "Is the problem really that we decided to leave Afghanistan after almost 20 years in-country, trillions of dollars spent and thousands of American lives lost? I don’t think so.

The problem was that we didn’t leave soon enough. We fell into the trap of trying to create order out of chaos, a modern country out of tribalistic people, and democracy out of nowhere.

Our mission in going to Afghanistan was honorable and necessary. The Taliban, who controlled Afghanistan, harbored and protected the terrorist organization that was behind the 9/11 attacks on the United States, and they needed to pay a price.

That price was largely extracted within the initial months in Afghanistan. We should have learned from Desert Storm and other brief military interventions: When we go to war, we should have a clear mission, we should win resoundingly, and we should have a definitive exit strategy."
