“We have taken a drastically different approach here in Florida to managing COVID under the leadership of Governor DeSantis,” Cammack emphasized. ‘Yes, we are seeing very, very low rates of hospitalization and death rates. For example, we have a comparable population to that of New York, and some are sturdy, but we have drastically different policies as to how we handle it. So in New York, for example, just this week, they have had 4,600 hospitalizations … on daily, and they’re averaging 60 to 70 deaths on a daily basis.

Blue states’ heavy-handed, top-down approach contrasts Florida’s common-sense handling of the pandemic, making monoclonal antibody treatments readily available for all Floridians. We can thank @GovRonDeSantis for leading with thought and pragmatism.https://t.co/MUsOtCbGDN

Compare that to Florida, where we are under 30 daily deaths, and our hospitalizations are sitting about 1,400. So, even though they are seeing the surges, it’s the approach is different among the comparable population…

“We have put a common-sense approach, thoughtful, pragmatic approach first by making sure that our first responders, that our hospitals, that our health departments and our private partners have all the resources available,’ she added. ‘Contrast that to a heavy-handed top-down approach we have seen from big government states like New York, and they are seeing higher rates of transmission, higher hospitalizations.”

From Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis: “Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a lawsuit against the Biden Administration’s unconstitutional Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) employer vaccine mandate. As soon as the unlawful emergency temporary standard (ETS) is published in the Federal Register tomorrow, the lawsuit will be immediately filed with the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. For more information on the court action, click here.

‘We started with 15 days to slow the spread and now it’s get jabbed or lose your job,’ said Governor Ron DeSantis. ‘We’re supposed to be a government of laws, not a government of men. This OSHA rule is 500 pages of a government of bureaucracy, a government that is being run by executive edict, not a government bound by constitutional constraints. The State of Florida will immediately challenge the OSHA rule in court because it’s inconsistent with the Constitution and not legally authorized through Congressional statutes. There is no federal police power and the federal government cannot unilaterally impose medical policy under the guise of workplace regulation. Individuals should make informed choices about their own healthcare. It is important to stand up for people’s individual ability to make decisions for themselves.”

National Review’s Charlie Cooke writes, “Two months ago, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida was being roundly castigated for promoting the use of Regeneron’s monoclonal-antibody treatment as part of his state’s efforts to fight COVID-19. Desperate to find something sinister in the push, DeSantis’s critics threw out every charge they could dream up. At first, the line was that Regeneron’s treatment didn’t work. Then, it was that Regeneron’s treatment worked fine, but represented a dangerous distraction from the vaccine. And, finally, it was that Regeneron’s treatment was part of a corrupt plot to enrich DeSantis’s donors.

Today, we learn from the Washington Post that, actually, none of that was the problem. Instead, DeSantis’s sin is that he has been relying upon monoclonal-antibody treatment too much, and that this is unfair to other states that now need it.

What a difference eight weeks make.

Ron DeSantis Was Right about Monoclonal-Antibody Therapy; Florida’s governor was blasted by progressives for promoting Regeneron’s COVID treatment. Now, demand is so great the Biden administration is rationing it https://t.co/gXq8CHKINP

The Post informs us that the Biden administration has been so impressed by the impact that Regeneron’s treatment has made that it is now seeking to ‘stave off shortages’ of the drug by ‘purchasing 1.4 million additional doses’ and tasking the Department of Health and Human Services with setting ‘the rules for distribution . . . instead of allowing states, medical facilities and doctors to order them directly.’ In explaining this move, the Post submits that ‘soaring demand for the therapy represents a sharp turn from just two months ago, when monoclonal antibodies were widely available and awareness of them was low’ — which . . . is certainly one way of admitting that the same people who relentlessly condemned DeSantis for trying to raise that ‘awareness’ ‘just two months ago’ are today coming around to his point of view.

Fox News reports, “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday slammed President Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates as “not following science” on the natural immunity people acquire from already being infected.

‘These mandates, this is not about science,’ the Republican governor said during a press conference in Alachua County. ‘Because if it was about science, you would recognize the infection conferred immunity.’

‘Every single credible study always shows that it [natural immunity] provides good protection,’ he continued. ‘So I don’t support mandates at all, but if you’re doing mandate based off this, if you were really following science, you would acknowledge this natural immunity. And instead they ignore it. … It’s really about using government power, control to mandate, much more than it is about the underlying medical issues that are involved.”

FEE’s Brad Polumbo writes, “Debate over the welfare state is once again making headlines. On Monday, the expanded unemployment welfare system was finally allowed to expire after more than a year. Originally created as a ‘short-term’ measure authorized for a few months in March 2020 then repeatedly extended, these benefits paid many of the unemployed more than their former jobs, with benefits reaching up to $25/hour in dozens of states.

Dozens of Republican-led states chose to end the benefits early. This week’s termination of enhanced benefits was in the Democrat-run states that maintained the expanded payouts, and with their lapse, the debate over whether these benefits were disincentivizing work was reignited.

The Wall Street Journal even published a news article, widely circulated among welfare advocates, claiming that ‘states that cut off enhanced unemployment benefits early didn’t see a significant boost in job growth.’ This was a bizarre spin given that the article itself notes that ‘economists generally agree the enhanced benefits caused some people to stay out of the labor market’ and contains several pieces of evidence suggesting they did have a significant effect. But the skewed reporting is consistent with a broad pattern in media coverage and political commentary that has attempted to downplay and deny any drawbacks of the welfare expansion.”
