On Friday, HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher noted that it wasn’t the COVID-19 pandemic that caused massive learning loss, it was the way government handled it.

Quoting a report, Maher said, “The pandemic erased two decades of progress in math and reading.’”

“See, right away, I’ve gotta say, this pisses me off,” he said. “I see these headlines all the time.”

“The pandemic didn’t do that. The way we handled the pandemic did that,” Maher insisted.

“The pandemic certainly was a thing but let’s not just say the pandemic,” he added. “Because it was not written in stone that we had to handle it the way we did.”

Maher continued to explain the damage done during the pandemic.

The host checked many boxes, “ACT scores are the lowest in 30 years, anxiety and depression way up. The body mass index increased, doubled for kids 2-19. Drug overdose deaths, murders way up, inflation at a 40-year high, domestic violence increased. Oh, and my favorite, car crashes. They couldn’t figure this out… finally… the experts said, you know what it is? People just went (expletive) mental. They went just nuts. They’re like, I’m home, the (expletive) kids are here all the time, my stupid husband is here all the time, I’m just going to take it out on the highway, and they did.”

Maher also noted that “Florida did well” during the pandemic by focusing on seniors and those most vulnerable as opposed to other states.

It was the next major step in the already continual centralization of government involvement and control of Americans’ personal health care. Now, two years since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, more governmentalization of health care has deprived us not only of our health but our freedoms. Politics and bureaucracy have corrupted the health care industry and subjected us to the will of bureaucracy and the lobbyist class.”

“We have taken a drastically different approach here in Florida to managing COVID under the leadership of Governor DeSantis,” Cammack emphasized. ‘Yes, we are seeing very, very low rates of hospitalization and death rates. For example, we have a comparable population to that of New York, and some are sturdy, but we have drastically different policies as to how we handle it. So in New York, for example, just this week, they have had 4,600 hospitalizations … on daily, and they’re averaging 60 to 70 deaths on a daily basis.

Compare that to Florida, where we are under 30 daily deaths, and our hospitalizations are sitting about 1,400. So, even though they are seeing the surges, it’s the approach is different among the comparable population…

“We have put a common-sense approach, thoughtful, pragmatic approach first by making sure that our first responders, that our hospitals, that our health departments and our private partners have all the resources available,’ she added. ‘Contrast that to a heavy-handed top-down approach we have seen from big government states like New York, and they are seeing higher rates of transmission, higher hospitalizations.”

Fox News reports, ”Real Time host Bill Maher railed against ongoing COVID restrictions, declaring the pandemic ‘over.’

Maher kicked off the show’s panel discussion Friday night by expressing relief that Dr. Anthony Fauci has given the green light on Halloween since it’s been Maher’s ‘position since the beginning of this.’

‘Just resume living,’ Maher told his audience. ‘I know some people seem to not want to give up on the wonderful pandemic, but you know what? It’s over. There’s always going to be a variant. You shouldn’t have to wear masks. I should be to … I haven’t had a meeting with my staff since March of 2020. Why?’

‘Also, vaccine, mask, pick one! You’ve got to pick. You can’t make me mask if I’ve had the vaccine,’ Maher added.”

Given how polarized we are at present, one can easily comprehend why, in its early days, so many political obsessives thought it might be efficacious to use the pandemic as a stick. But now? Eighteen months in?
