Gov. Mandela Barnes, according to a new Emerson College poll released on Tuesday.”
“Forty-eight percent of very likely voters said they support the sitting senator, while 44 percent said they will vote for Barnes, according to the poll,” the report noted.

It continued, “After winning the Democratic primary last month, Barnes briefly polled ahead of Johnson. However, Johnson has since closed the gap, and recent polling — including a Spectrum News-Siena College poll also released on Tuesday — showed the candidates within 1 percentage point of each other.”

Ron has been a colleague and friend who has always stood up for liberty and constitutional principles.

With Republicans expected to make significant gains in the midterm election, winning in the Senate is crucial.

It turns out that 18 states in the US are effectively run by Democrats, who control both the executive and legislative branches. As Harris notes, Democratic leaders tend to blame Republicans for foiling their progressive plans, but that’s hardly the case in these 18 states where Republicans stand well away from the levers of power.

The Washington Times reports, “Mr. Steil said he sees the GOP’s role on the committee to push back on government intervention, which he dubbed as a fight between socialism and capitalism.

‘I think we’re at a unique inflection point in the history of our country, about the direction that we want to go to create and generate prosperity,’ Mr. Steil said. ‘American capitalism is on trial in this committee. We have a unique opportunity to vanquish the socialist argument and come out successfully with American capitalism for generations to come.’

Richard Meagher, a political science professor at Randolph-Macon College, said the battle between capitalism and socialism is one that’s long been in the spirit of Republicans in Congress.

The new Select Committee on the Economy (@EconomyGOP) presents Republicans’ path forward for economic prosperity and opportunity for all.

‘It’s an old, old story going back to the post-war years,’ Mr. Meagher said. ‘That’s what Senator Taft used to say in Ohio in the 1950s. It’s what [Barry] Goldwater argued. It’s what Reagan argued. It goes back in the long history of conservative politics. Republicans argue that they’re the defenders of capitalism, and that the Democrats, when they are pushing government programs, are ushering in socialism.’

Mr. Arrington argues that stakes are higher in the current Congress, citing proposals in President Biden’s $1.9 trillion spending bill that would greatly expand the American welfare state.

The bill, known as Build Back Better, passed the House on Friday on a 220-213 vote, sending it off to the Senate for consideration.”

In the wake of the new report from The Intercept that appeared to show Dr. Anthony Fauci might have been “untruthful” before Congress when asked about the funding of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, more Republicans are calling for an investigation.

The Daily Wire reported Tuesday, “In May of 2021, Dr. Fauci, in his testimony to a Senate committee investigating whether the U.S. funded ‘gain-of-function’ research at
the Wuhan Institute of Virology, claimed that the NIH ‘has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

The Intercept, however, found, through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, evidence that the NIH issued a ‘bat coronavirus grant’ to a group called the EcoHealth Alliance for ‘$3.1 million, including $599,000 that the Wuhan Institute of Virology used in part to identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans.’

That puts Dr. Fauci in the spotlight. Dr. Ebright even suggested that Fauci was being ‘untruthful’ in his remarks to the Senate.

Several Republicans have already suggested that Dr. Fauci must face a full investigation and be totally forthcoming about his agency’s — and the NIH’s — involvement in funding research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

Our enemies on 9/11 were al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Now both have our weapons

Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace commented on Fox News Thursday about the U.S. weapons that have now ended up in Taliban hands after American troop withdrawal.

“Perhaps we should have taken some of that equipment,” Mace said during an interview. “Perhaps we should have demolished some of that equipment so that it did not get into the hands of terrorists.”

“So they should not be using our arms and munitions, but this is what happens, and this happened with the United States previously – we have not learned these lessons.”

No, we have not learned. Let’s focus on one word Mace said: “previously.”

Because that is key.

Sen. Rand Paul wrote about U.S. weapons ending up in enemy hands in 2019, “Iran, to this day, the military still has some U.S. weapons left over from weapons the U.S. supplied to the shah. In Iraq, some of the weapons we gave the country to fight Iran were still there when we returned to fight Saddam Hussein. In Afghanistan, some of the weapons we gave the mujahedeen to fight the Russians were still there when we returned to fight the Taliban.”

“Proliferating arms in the midst of chaos is a recipe for disaster,” Paul observed.

No one should be surprised Saudi Arabia is giving American-made weapons to al-Qaeda: @RandPaul said US weapons would end up in terrorists’ hands. You should have listened to Rand Paul https://t.co/rltbcdEB8f

— Jack Hunter (@jackhunter74) February 6, 2019

Though the details of the situations vary, in the recent past U.S. weapons that have been sold to Saudi Arabia or given to insurgents in Syria have wound up in enemy hands, including al-Qaeda and similar groups.

A 2015 Reuters report noted, and I could cite many reports of the same thing happening but consider this a typical example: “Syrian rebels trained by the United States gave some of their equipment to the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in exchange for safe passage, a U.S. military spokesman said on Friday, the latest blow to a troubled U.S. effort to train local partners to fight Islamic State militants.”

“The rebels surrendered six pick-up trucks and some ammunition, or about one-quarter of their issued equipment,” the report noted.

So… the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan to punish the Taliban for harboring al-Qaeda, the group that attacked the United States on 9/11. America’s explicit military goal was to route the Taliban and stomp out al-Qaeda.

Yet an unavoidable result of twenty years of war is that the U.S. has since armed al-Qaeda inadvertently and now arms the Taliban, however accidentally.

What was the point of the war again?

Never Trump Republicans biggest problem with Trump has always been his ‘America First’ foreign policy

What does every current Never Trump Republican member of Congress have in common besides being against Donald Trump? They are staunchly opposed to the former president’s ‘America First’ foreign policy.

For these Never Trumpers, this is not a bug, it’s a feature.

I am not saying that Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney and Adam Kinzinger were not legitimately horrified by the Capitol riot on January 6, 2020. I was too. It was a terrible and embarrassing day for the United States.

I am saying that if President Trump pursued the same foreign policy as George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, you would not have heard as much criticism of Trump from Mrs. Cheney, Romney and Kinzinger. Even about January 6.

If Trump was a neoconservative “warmongering fool,” Liz Cheney would be his greatest supporter. Even after Trump claimed the election was stolen. Even after January 6.

— Jack Hunter (@jackhunter74) May 12, 2021

Because before January 6, there was March 20, 2003 – the day the U.S. invaded Iraq. I don’t have to revisit every granular detail of that debacle to recall what most Americans and the world have long known: The U.S. intervention in Iraq was arguably the worst foreign policy mistake in our nation’s history. Trump rightly called the Iraq war “the worst mistake, the most costly mistake in the history of our country.”

Liz Cheney does not think the Iraq war was a mistake, and has long appeared to want to repeat that mistake in Iran. Mitt Romney has always adhered to Bush-era neoconservative foreign policy, has long defended the Iraq war, and like Cheney, wouldn’t mind doing it again in Iran. Similar to Cheney and Romney, Adam Kinzinger is not a fan of the U.S. pulling troops out of any combat zone at any time.

Not surprisingly, Kinzinger is opposed to the removal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Here is the congressman’s recent comments on that front, including bashing Trump for pursuing troop withdrawal, along with a follow up by advisor to Sen. Rand Paul, Doug Stafford:

No, warmongers like you who want to nation build and police the world forever own this. 15 years ago or 15 years from now, it would be the same result.

But much like your political judgement, your foreign policy judgement is god awful.

Enjoy your last few months in office. https://t.co/sC0lTKgu81

— Doug Stafford (@dougstafford) August 13, 2021

Romney predictably hates that U.S. troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The Biden administration’s unwillingness to alter the Afghan withdrawal plan based on changing circumstances on the ground & the grave implications for US security interests is a tragedy & a cause for serious concern about how the administration will deal with global challenges. https://t.co/rM43t2uakH

— Senator Mitt Romney (@SenatorRomney) August 11, 2021

And of course for Liz Cheney, permanent war is a religion.

What’s happening in Afghanistan is catastrophic. US forces on the ground were working w/Afghan forces to prevent terrorists from establishing safe havens from which they can attack us again.

Withdrawing US forces is allowing terrorists & their allies to take over the country.

— Liz Cheney (@Liz_Cheney) August 9, 2021

Stafford is right that in 15 years or even 100 years, the chaos happening in Afghanistan right now after troop withdrawal was always inevitable. The only alternative is the U.S. staying there forever.

Which Cheney, Romney and Kinzinger would have no problem with.

There is no time that Cheney, Romney or Kinzinger would advocate for avoiding war or ending a war that the hawkish Washington foreign policy establishment wanted to start or continue.

They will never say it forthright in public, but what the current Never Trump Republicans in Congress hate most is that Donald Trump significantly changed the conversation about what Republican foreign policy should be. Liz Cheney is part of a family that was able to almost exclusively define Republican foreign policy for a generation.

No more. ‘America First’ has now replaced the tired and disproven ‘If we don’t fight them over there, we’re going to have to fight them here.’ After all these war-weary years, fewer Americans than ever believe that anymore.

Fewer Republicans than ever believe it – and Never Trump perpetual war propagandists can’t stand it.
